Market Background: Why On-Farm Feed Mills Matter in Madagascar

Madagascar is an island nation where most poultry is still raised as backyard, free-range flocks. Commercial layer farms are concentrated on the outskirts of the major cities — mainly around Antananarivo, the capital, and Toamasina.

The densest egg-producing area runs north of Antananarivo along the RN4 corridor, centred on Mahitsy and Mahazaza. Around 40% of the eggs consumed in Madagascar come from farms in this area, which holds an estimated 200–250 layer farms, most with several tens of thousands of layers each.

Two features of the local feed market shaped this project:

• Farms mix their own feed. Many layer farms here produce their own feed and sell the surplus to other farms — so the equipment has to suit an on-farm mill that also supplies neighbours.
• Locally sourced raw materials. Feed is built mainly on rice bran, cassava, cottonseed cake and paddy rice, rather than the corn–soybean meal base common in other markets.

The customer is a medium-sized layer farm producing mainly eggs, with a smaller broiler operation.

They needed a 10 T/H fully automatic pellet feed production line able to make complete pelleted poultry feed from locally available raw materials.
