Market Background: Why Kenyan Layer Farms Are Building Their Own Feed Mills

Kenya is one of East Africa's core livestock and poultry markets. Layer, broiler, pig, cattle and sheep production is growing quickly, and the number of commercial farms rises every year.

Two pressures are pushing farms to make their own feed:

• A structural feed deficit. Kenya has been seeking around US$3.2 billion to expand animal feed production over a decade and close the gap between feed supply and demand (reported 2023).
• High and unstable feed costs. Animal feed prices rose by roughly 60% over a two-year period, and feed accounts for about 70% of poultry and dairy production costs. Several feed millers have shut down, leaving supply erratic (reported 2024).

For a 100,000-bird layer farm, that combination — expensive commercial feed on one side, unpredictable supply on the other — makes on-farm feed production a straightforward decision.

They needed a 10 T/H fully automatic pellet feed production line able to make complete pelleted poultry feed from locally available raw materials.
